Mary Schrad of Greeley is a pioneer in northern Colorado. Her dedication to coaching others in being physically fit was evident when she first brought Contours Express, a women?s workout franchise, to the northern Front Range. Today, she has helped bring other women to realize that emotions can prohibit them from losing or gaining weight.

Schrad, 51, who owns the Contours Express in Greeley, has taken advice on exercise to another level in a new book she was asked to co-author, ?Chicken Soup for the Soul Supplements and Exercise Guide for the Contours Express Member… A Journey to Weight Loss and Emotional Gain.?

The book is based on women?s experiences in life and their journey. It touches on key points about how to be mentally fit to prepare oneself for the changes needed for a healthy lifestyle. ?The basis of understanding for women is that emotional is just as important as physical,? Schrad said.

Publishers from Chicken Soup for the Soul Supplements approached Contours Express corporate members and asked for help in creating a book that portrayed important issues on a healthy lifestyle. Immediately, the franchise thought of Schrad?s ability to connect with her members in Greeley.

So Schrad recruited her own test models. The clients at Contours Express in Greeley helped Schrad pinpoint topics to address in the book. Chapters vary from weight loss and emotional gain, gal pals and life?s stages, to understanding calories, workouts for the teenager, the freshman 15, to fitness needs for women from their 20s to their 60s.

?My test models for the book were the members,? she said. ?They are so influential in putting all of this together.?

Schrad created the workout card in the book. Today, the programs are used in more than 500 Contours Express clubs throughout the nation. ?It?s still the basic model,? Schrad said. ?My members influenced me to customize their individual needs, and I was able to create it based off of them. Now, the whole franchise is using it as their model.?

Through the book-writing experience, Schrad said she can look back and see the accomplishments she and her members have made from it.

?The book is not just about weight loss and emotional gain,? Schrad said. ?It focuses on gains in our lives, body, mind and spirit. … I listened to my members, and they gave me a gift I could share with every woman around the country.?

Through the book, she said she hopes every woman across the nation realizes her potential in healthy living.

?I have a passion about bringing out the best in women,? she said. ?This book stands for getting women emotionally to wake up and physically take care of themselves and be the best they can be.?
